The World Association for Social Psychiatry (WASP) celebrated its half-century existence in 2014. Social Psychiatry is at a turning point in its history with increasing recognition of the central role that social factors play in the cause, course and treatment of mental illness. Just as the 19th century was the heyday of descriptive psychopathology and the 20th that of the first really effective psychological and pharmacological treatments, we expect the 21st Century to be the one in which we finally defeat the social exclusion, stigma, enforced idleness and coercive practices that haunt psychiatry.
